Itaska, speaking at the first Girlvolution conference in 2010

Where are you now and what are you doing?
Now at this point in time I am attending Eastern Washington University as a freshman. I plan to major in social work (PV has played a big part of that ) and to minor in African studies. I will be done with my minor by the end of next fall. Just enjoying my first year of college, doing homework most of the time, and trying to look for a part time job.

How did you get involved with Powerful Voices?
I got involved with PV when I was in the 8th grade. I went to Aki Kurose Middle School and we had a girls group there that met weekly.

What was your first impression of Powerful Voices?
My first impression of PV... I didn't know exactly what it was. At first it was just something to do. But the more i learned about PV the more it intrigued me.

Looking back, how did Powerful Voices impact your life?
Looking back , PV played a big role in my life in middle and in high school. Especially high school because I really gained another family.  They helped me with my poetry, with my goals, jobs, if i needed a shoulder to lean on, or someone to vent too. PV was there for me through everything!  I really appreciate and admire that. They really help " girls become stronger women".   I love you guys!

What is the best thing that has happened to you since being involved with Powerful Voices?
Since being involved with PV I have had many job intern opportunities.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Someone might be surprised that I don't write poetry or do spoken word anymore and that i love to go fishing.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
The first superpower that popped up in my mind was to read minds.

What do you think are important issues affecting girls?
I think important issues affecting girls are sex and and not knowing what their capable of.

What would you like to change about the world?
I would like to change the poverty and the violence.

What is your dream for girls?
My dream for girls is for them to realize their strengths, to believe in themselves, and to be aware.
