Building Community: Girls Rising Intern 2014

Paige here, the new intern for 2014 Girls Rising this summer! Just coming into my 3rd week at Powerful Voices and been loving all the (em)POWERFUL info/training thrown at me thus far. My first week here I went to this awesome Girl Justice training hosted by PV (Powerful Voices). We were trained on ways to facilitate some deep stuff like: how to build community, develop a positive girl culture, awareness of adultism, and specifically the Do’s and Don’ts of working with youth.

Here's some that stuck out to me:

Do create a community agreement of confidentiality and a safe space.
Don’t limit girls view’s of themselves by making adultist remarks.
Do be open to learning from youth.
Don’t perpetuate the teacher-student role and limit talking at youth. Talk with youth.
Do know your role.
Don’t be afraid to be silly and have fun with your program!

My second week at PV gave me some time to really settle into my new work space (complete with a phone with my own extension number!). I was grateful to get some time to get to know my awesome co-workers during a staff retreat. During the retreat we went over different types of leadership, as well as tips on how we could best support each other. Then of course we had to make some time for just kicking it so we went go-karting! Ch-ch-check it.

Orientation for program was this Tuesday and the first full day of the Girls Rising program starts next week! More reflections to come on my journey with Stephany (my supervisor), to help Girls (Rising) up to 7th and 8th grade help themselves, through getting to know their own reflections a little better.
